Rugby?

South African rugby has faced its fair share of trials and tribulations over the last 30 years.

We as a "democratic" country have tried to use sports as a unifying agent for our countries ridiculous state at the moment. Yes in many cases it has! South Africans can be proud and should show pride in the fact that we have won world cups in rugby and golf! In soccer we have won the African Cup of Nations, there are way too many Boxing accolades to be mentioned. We are indeed a very talented sporting nation.

However when it comes to rugby i dare say that ,that is where our strength is. When the Springboks run on yo the field to face any of their enemies i and i am sure that the whole rugby watching nation get goosies !!! When we win we win together! When we lose we lose together! We laugh , cry and fight together! YES we are a proud Rugby nation. Or so it seems!

Along comes domestic and super tournaments and Fucks everything up!
Sure there's your normal "banter" and sarcastic remarks. It's all part of our rugby culture! The banter and remarks are good and provides for very good laughs when reading them or even being part of them on twitter or facebook.

Where do you draw the line though?
Over the last weekend just browsing at the banter i noticed remarks like "yah Schalk is injured" or "damn those are ugly shirts" or even Habana should also get injured. W.T.F people! This is SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!

We should be supporting local teams when they play against teams abroad. Mocking a persons injuries or ill discipline is just wrong. Grow th fuck up!!!!! Wow those shirts are ugly, pfff they are the defending champions and could wear scuba diving suites for all i care. These are athletes that represent our country. We will never become a unified country as long as you get the jealous assholes that make negative comments and those who just don't know that they don 't know.

For the record i am and always will be a Gauteng Lions supporter. So these comments are purely in the interest of South African Rugby and South African Sport........

  1. Let me start off by saying I agree completely with you on the issue of fans cheering injuries to players of other teams. That is a fair comment and can never be condoned.

Now, you can call me a negative asshole all you want but I will never support the Bulls. I grew up hating the Bulls cos I was and have always been a WP man. That has never changed and will never change. Those feelings run deep. I've been a WP fan since I was 5 years old, which makes it 33 years this year.

The fact that they, the Bulls, do indeed have ugly jerseys, as mentioned by my wife, is there for all too see. I don`t have to like it cos I`m from the same country.

Do you think the rest of England will support Man Utd when they play, let`s say, Real Madrid in the Champions League? I guarantee you all the Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea fans will go with Real. Those same fans will however support Wayne Rooney when he runs out for England. Does that make them "unloyal" to England?

I support all the local sides except for the Bulls and I have my reasons for that. When those Bulls players don the Green & Gold, I will support them with gusto, as I always have.

Provincial rugby is surely not the outlet to "unify" this country. In fact, it has always been a divisive factor, especially during the years when we had no international rugby.

So you can call me and my wife whatever you want but the views will never change. I am as much a loyal South African as the next man and support all other teams except for one. That sure as hell does not make me less of a South African.

Rather direct the diatribe towards the South Africans wearing All Black jerseys when the Boks play the AB`s. That is something to worry about.

  2. thanks very much for your insight and honesty. Firstly none of my comments were directed at you or your lovely wife.(should know that). Secondly it was directed at people who wish bad upon others.... I am happy that you answered it the way i would have. like you i have been a Lions supporter for over 30 years. thanks F
